From Inspiration to Rug: Capturing the Essence, Not the Detail
Posted on
One of the things we love most about tufting is how it allows us to take an idea - sometimes something really simple - and turn it into a bold, textured piece of art.
For us, our rugs aren't just functional items - they're decorative pieces. They're designed to be seen, appreciated, and to make a statement in a space. Because of that, our focus isn't on recreating something perfectly or getting lost in tiny details. Instead, we focus on the essence of the inspiration.
When we begin a design, we ask: what makes this instantly recognisable? Is it a shape, a pose, a feeling, or a certain energy? That's what we bring into the rug.
A recent piece we created was inspired by Michael Jackson, especially with all the excitement around the upcoming movie. Instead of creating a detailed portrait, we focused on something far more iconic - his silhouettes. The lean, the stance, the movement. These are the moments that people recognise instantly, even without facial features or intricate detail.
By reducing the design to bold black shapes on a clean background, the final piece captures that unmistakable energy in a way that feels modern, minimal, and striking. It shows how powerful simplicity can be.

This approach is at the heart of what we do. Tufted art doesn't need to be overly complicated to stand out. In fact, stripping a design back often makes it stronger and more impactful as a visual piece. It allows the subject to speak clearly and gives the rug a more timeless, gallery-like feel.
We always encourage people to think about inspiration in this way. You don't need every detail - just the right ones. When you focus on the core idea, you end up with something that not only looks good, but feels intentional.
At the end of the day, it's about taking inspiration, refining it, and turning it into something that can live in your space as art.
