What to Expect at Your First Tufting Workshop in London
Posted on
Thinking about booking your first tufting workshop but not sure what to expect? This is your complete, honest, no-surprises guide to what a session at Tufting London — the UK's first professional tufting studio with over 1,400 five-star Google reviews — actually looks, feels, and sounds like from the moment you arrive to the
moment you leave with your finished rug.

You Are Going to Love It — But Here Is What to Know First
Booking your first tufting workshop is one of the most exciting creative decisions you can make in London right now. But we know that trying something completely new — particularly something you have only seen on a screen before — can come with questions. What actually happens when I walk through the door? What should I wear? How long will it take? Will I be able to do it?
At Tufting London — the UK's first and original professional tufting studio, founded in 2022, with over 1,400 five-star Google reviews — we want every single person who books with us to arrive feeling calm, excited, and completely prepared for a brilliant afternoon. So here, in full, is everything you need to know before your first session.
First Things First: What Kind of Experience Is a Tufting Workshop?
Before anything else, it helps to understand the overall character of a tufting workshop — because it is quite different from what many people expect.
It Is Social and Energising
A tufting workshop at Tufting London is not a quiet, solitary, heads-down experience. It is warm, lively, and social — a room full of people making things, sharing colour decisions, comparing designs, and thoroughly enjoying themselves. The energy in the studio is genuinely electric — in the best possible sense. Whether you come alone, with a partner, with friends, or as part of a group, you will find yourself in a room that buzzes with creative energy and good humour from the moment the session begins.
It Is Relaxed and Completely Unpressured
At the same time, there is no rush, no competition, and no pressure whatsoever. Our expert instructors are with you throughout — patient, enthusiastic, and genuinely invested in making sure your experience is as enjoyable and as satisfying as possible. You work at your own pace. You make your own creative decisions. And you are supported every step of the way by a team that has guided thousands of first-timers through exactly the same experience. It Is a Genuine Opportunity to Unwind
Many of our makers describe their tufting session as one of the most genuinely relaxing things they have done in a long time — which surprises them, given how active and engaged the experience is.
The creative focus of tufting — the way it draws your attention fully into the present moment and away from the noise of everyday life — produces a deeply restorative sense of calm that most people do not anticipate and almost universally treasure. Come in wound up. Leave genuinely unwound.

Getting There: Finding Tufting London
Tufting London is located in central London, just a one-minute walk from Nine Elms Station on the Northern Line, Zone 1. It is one of the most easily accessible creative studios in the capital — straightforward to reach from every part of London and from outside the city via the Underground.
When you arrive at Nine Elms Station, you are moments away from our studio entrance.
What to Wear
This one is beautifully simple: wear whatever you are comfortable in.
Tufting is a hands-on, creative activity and there is a small chance — as with any craft — that you might pick up a little colour from the yarn during your session. We therefore suggest avoiding anything you would be devastated to get a tiny mark on. Beyond that, dress however you like.
Smart, casual, whatever suits the rest of your day — there is no dress code, no requirement, and no judgement whatsoever at Tufting London.
What to Bring
Honestly? Just yourself. Everything you need for your tufting session is provided by us — the equipment, the materials, the expert guidance, and the packaging for your finished rug to travel home safely.
You might want to bring a water bottle and perhaps a snack if you are coming straight from work or a long journey. A fully charged phone is always a good idea — you will almost certainly want to photograph your finished rug, and the studio makes a brilliant backdrop. Beyond that, the only thing you truly need to bring is yourself and your enthusiasm.
How Long Will Your Session Take?
Session lengths at Tufting London vary depending on the size of rug you choose — and it is worth understanding this before you book so you can plan your day accordingly.
Mini Rug - Our Mini Rug session is the perfect introduction to tufting — designed to be completed comfortably within a single session of approximately three and a half hours. It is the ideal choice for first-timers, for those with a busier schedule, and for anyone who wants to experience the full joy of tufting — from blank canvas to finished rug — in a single, satisfying afternoon.
Standard Rug - Our Standard Rug is a more ambitious project that produces a larger, more substantial finished piece. Session time varies depending on your design and pace — our instructors will give you a clear sense of timing when you arrive and help you manage your session to make the most of your time.
Large Rug - Our Large Rug is a truly impressive undertaking — and one that produces a genuinely statement-making finished piece. Please note that due to the scale and ambition of the Large Rug, it will typically require two separate sessions to complete. This gives you the time to do full justice to a large-scale design without rushing — and gives you two brilliant studio sessions to look forward to
rather than one.
What Does the Studio Feel Like?
We are often asked this — and it is one of our favourite questions to answer, because the honest answer is: better than you imagine. Tufting London's studio is a purpose-built creative space that has been designed with one thing above all others in mind: the experience of the maker. From the moment you walk in, you are surrounded by colour — walls of yarn in every shade imaginable, the vibrant energy of works in progress on tufting frames, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere of a space that has been filled
with thousands of hours of creative joy.
It is professional without being intimidating. Beautifully equipped without being clinical. And above all, it is alive — with the sound of creative activity, the laughter of makers discovering something new, and the infectious energy of a room full of people doing something they love.
Many of our makers tell us that walking into the studio for the first time is one of their favourite moments of the whole experience. We hope it will be one of yours too.

What You Leave With
This is the part that never gets old to witness — the moment a maker lifts their finished rug from the frame and sees, for the first time, the complete piece they have created.
At the end of your session, you leave Tufting London with a completely finished, professionally completed, hand-tufted rug — made entirely by your own hands, in your own colours, to your own design. Not a kit to finish at home. Not a work in progress to come back to. A done, beautiful, display-ready piece of handmade textile art.
Your rug is finished with a professional latex backing that locks every loop of yarn permanently in place — giving it the durability and quality of a professionally made rug rather than a craft project. It is ready to go straight onto your floor, onto your wall, or into a gift bag for someone who is going to absolutely love it.
For those completing a Large Rug across two sessions, you will take home your finished piece at the end of your second visit — and the anticipation of the reveal is, if anything, even more satisfying for having been worth waiting for.
Who Is a Tufting Workshop Suitable For?
Tufting London welcomes adults of all ages, all backgrounds, and all levels of creative experience. You do not need to be artistic. You do not need to have any prior knowledge of tufting or textile craft. You do not need to be particularly patient, particularly skilled with your hands, or particularly confident about your creative abilities.
Our workshops are designed from the ground up to be completely accessible to the absolute beginner — and our over 1,400 five-star Google reviews reflect the consistent experience of people who arrived uncertain and left absolutely delighted with what they had made.
Children With a Parent or Adult Supervisor
Tufting London welcomes children to our workshops, provided they are accompanied by a parent or responsible adult who will be present and supervising throughout the entire session. The experience of making something together — a child and their parent working side by side, each on their own design — is one of the most joyful and most memorable things a family can do together in London.
Please note that children must be supervised by their accompanying adult at all times during the session. Our team is always happy to discuss suitability for specific ages when you get in touch to book.
Groups of Every Size
From a solo creative afternoon to a hen party for thirty, Tufting London accommodates groups of every size with equal warmth and expertise. We are the only tufting studio in the United Kingdom capable of hosting up to 40 makers simultaneously — making us the natural choice for birthdays, hen dos, corporate away days, team-building events, and any occasion that calls for a genuinely extraordinary group experience.
Still Have Questions? We Are Here.
If there is anything else you would like to know before booking your first session — about the studio, the workshop formats, the booking process, or anything else — our team is always delighted to help. Get in touch via our website and we will answer every question with the care and enthusiasm that over 1,400 five-star reviews suggest you can expect from us.
We cannot wait to welcome you.
